Zucca - In the early 1930’s an American was able to obtain some Zucca seeds from Sicily where it was cultivated and in 1938 a Canadian acquired some seed and began cultivating it in the Similkameen Valley of BC. The Zucca proved to be a very profitable crop. Although the flesh is tasteless and odorless, it was easily colored and flavored and used to resemble various foods such as watermelon pickles or “citron”, “lemon” and “orange”. Unfortunately by the 1950’s, the use for Zucca declined and as a result they almost became extinct. Fortunately, in the early 1990’s Zucca seed was acquired and once again planted by preservationists. The Zucca needs a long warm growing season. Zuccas can grow to be over one hundred pounds but generally are much smaller in shorter growing areas. Low quantity. (10 seed/pkt)

Lettuce Leaf Basil - (Ocimum basilicum) (a.k.a. Mammoth Basil) This wonderful Italian heirloom has huge puckered leaves and is excellent for pesto and for seasoning tomato dishes. The leaves are so mild and flavorful they can even be used whole in tomato sandwiches. In 1865, Fearing Burr in Field and Garden Vegetables of America wrote, “The leaves of this variety are large, pale green, wrinkled and blistered like those of some kinds of lettuce.” This variety of basil was also described in Vilmorin’s The Vegetable Garden (1885). One of the best varieties of basil! Highly recommended! Annual. |
