New Zealand Spinach (1772)

Introduced into England in 1772 by Sir Joseph Banks who discovered it growing in Queen Charlotte’s Sound, New Zealand during the voyage of Captain James Cook. New Zealand Spinach (Tetragonia sp.) is not a true spinach, and is actually a warm season vegetable that must be planted once the soil is thoroughly warm. It loves the heat and will not bolt like true spinach does.

Strawberry Spinach (pre-1600)

(aka Strawberry Blite, Beetberry) This heirloom has been grown in Europe for centuries. The triangular leaves can be eaten like spinach and the small red fruit are mild tasting and can be used in salads. The leafy plants grow about 18" high and are very easy to grow. Self-seeds.
