Heirloom Melons are a warm season crop and love the heat. There are early smaller fruited varieties like Farnorth Melon and larger later varieties such as Banana and Montreal Market Melon. Melons can have green, orange or yellowish flesh and the skin can be smooth or netted. True Cantaloupes such as Noire des Carmes Melon have smooth skin and fragrant orange flesh. For short season areas make sure to choose one of the early varieties and lay down black plastic mulch, cut an x every few feet and plant the seedlings where the x’s are. This will increase the heat units around the plants.
